Today was our 4th day at the agriturismo. We decided to take a little road trip and try to see a couple of nearby towns. We ended up getting lost a lot and never really accomplished any site seeing or town touring but we did take in more wonderful flora and fauna of this beautiful region and blew up dust down many new country roads. We got a little stuck by getting in too deep in a tiny town (Castelfiorentino) and found ourselves driving up streets that felt uncomfortably tight even in our tiny car. To make matters more difficult, these narrow streets were very, very steep. We did lots of rolling backwards to try to go another route and ending up with our "boot" inches from an ancient building, which I really didn't want to be the one to put a dent into…. the stress of driving a stick shift, with
anything inches behind you, particularly on a steep hill, let alone something ancient…. well, I'm still doing deep breathing. In the end no buildings were damaged, no trash cans or flower pots knocked over and no dogs or people injured! Yay?
Stick shift skills sharply honed.
On the road to nowhere…
After all that, we had worked up an appetite and ended up stopping in a tiny, one-block town we had never heard of, Iano, for a bite to eat. The food was excellent - Avery got ravioli fungi (ravioli with mushroom sauce) and Quinn and Reese got... (shocker alert) picci, the thick spaghetti they are eating daily. I got roasted chicken. It was all delicious and the little town was so pretty:
